SSS.61. Raised fishbone stitch

I am running behind on this stitch challenge this month. The decision is to learn and work a few samples of the stitches. the working of this stitch is on Queenie’s blog.

The sample starts with the basic raised fishbone stitch, I tried working on a narrow curved shape after that, raised fishbone worked in 2 colours was the next sample.

In the first sample, the straight stitches were worked first and the raised fishbone stitch was worked in the centre, I tried working this stitch on a heart shape in the next sample, worked running stitch around raised fishbone shapes in third sample, using two needles with two green threads worked the fourth sample, the principle was the same, but to maintain the rhythm of one colour overlapping the other, it was more of slanted satin stitches, still I am satisfied with the effect. The last sample was an experiment to segregate large shapes into small shapes and work with different threads.

Though more thread is used, I am happy with the texture and the raised overlapping pattern created by this stitch.

 

Beyond TAST-5-Linear stitches-1

Two days ago I started this linear stitch study sampler. Still not sure the way to explore these linear stitches.
Started with back stitch.

Double back stitch, whipped back stitch, working crosses in between back stitches are the variations here.

How to fill a shape with free style Cretan stitches was tried in the second sample.

May be some decorative borders can be tried with these linear stitches.
The linear stitches worked on this sample are- herringbone, buttonhole and chain stitches.

The centre is worked in coral stitch, with two rows of running stitches and stem stitch outlines are worked  in this sample.

The base is Cretan stitch, with fly stitches in this sample, after outlining both sides with closed buttonhole stitch variation, worked rope stitches in light blue thread.

The idea of working decorative borders with linear stitches might work.

 

 

Works In Progress Wednesdays-180

For the past few days I was away from the computer, slowly getting back to routine.
The linear stitches are being explored on Beyond TAST this month. While working the earlier TAST challenges, many linear stitches were studied, explored and tried. I am yet to think of ways to work this month’s challenge.
Petal stitch and pearl stitch samplers were worked during this week on SSS challenge. They are small band samplers and easy to work. The details of these will be posted soon.
Another colour thread was started on the yoke for the cream tussar tunic. Paisley design again!

The colours are ok for leaves and veins, another colour needs to be brought in for flowers, which shouldn’t overshadow the greens. Still working on greens for the time being.

 

Works In Progress Wednesdays-179

The week the SSS challenge was set aside to work on Beyond TAST challenge. After working on a few more layering ideas, the sampler was completed for the time being.

The chain stitch embroidery is continued for the Cream tussar tunic. The progress is quite slow, but there is no urgency to make it faster. This project will take time.

Beyond TAST 2018-4. Layered Embroidery-3

While looking for inspiration, tried a sample of string art.

Straight stitches in light blue worked over dark blue thread rows.

The inner row of thread lifted with green thread. Saw this on youtube.

Herringbone square variation, fly stitch and upright cross over cross stitch.

Started with chevron stitch row,  worked 3 rows of chain stitches.

Returning back to this sample after some days and completed it by adding some c hain sticthes and straight stitches.

 

Beyond TAST 2018-4. Layered Embroidery-2

I have been working on this challenge whenever possible during these past weeks, just realized the details of samples were never posted after the first one.
The second sample is also a flower. The filling is with buttonhole stitches.

Outlining with chain stitch.

Trellis stitch.

Rope stitch

Straight stitches worked in angles on top of each other.

Again buttonhole.

Completed with straight stitches and pistil stitches. Another fantasy flower.

 

SSS.59. Knotted running stitch

Started with basic knotting over running stitch, decreased the length between the running stitches in the second sample.

The knots are worked over two rows of running stitches, the size of the knots is slightly bigger. In the fourth sample, the knots are worked alternatively over two running and single running stitch, again the knots are more prominent.

The running stitches are worked in an angle and the knots are worked over them in the first sample. The knots are worked over running stitch curve.

Are multiple knots possible over running stitch? This was tried in the first sample. Two rows of knotted running stitches are facing each other in the last sample.

Works In Progress Wednesdays-178

The treat idea from last week worked. I could work two stitch samplers on SSS challenge- Knotted running stitch and twisted shell chain stitch. The respective posts will follow
Working on these samplers and projects these few days, could not allot any time for Beyond TSST challenge.
The white and violet combo tunic is nearing completion, a few mirrors and the tunic will be ready to wear.

The work on cream tussar tunic is a lengthy one. It is just chain stitch outlines and chain stitch filling. Generally I take up simple stitches or mono colour on long projects. These save some time. Mind is also calm to learn new things.

I have seen sarees [length of 5.5 metres] embroidered on borders, and for the embroidery to be seen in front another 2.5 metres will be worked. Earlier it was only, chikan work, kantha work, this Kashmiri work, Persian embroidery, zardosi work, kutchwork… where the stitches are worked by hand. These days we have so many works done commercially. This is a huge industry now. Are they good? That’s a matter of opinion. I am interested in working the older embroideries, I try to work them on tunics, working on sarees will take very long time.

 

Works In Progress Wednesdays-177

Stitch challenges
An experiment of layered embroidery was attempted over chevron stitch this week. A detail a day was how this sample was worked.

The interesting stitches of SSS challenge are still waiting this week to be started. It would be better if I start on them today.
Projects
The work on cream tussar tunic –

The embroidery on violet and white combo tunic started yesterday. Herringbone, kutch work and mirror work will be worked on this.

I have some more time to work on Beyond TAST challenge, keeping the projects aside for the next few days and to work on SSS challenge will keep my mind fresh and energetic. This routine of working same stitches over and over again, is making me very lethargic.
On the other activity side-I have been trying some pickles! [our south Indian pickles are really hot!!!] Started with gooseberry, then lemon the next one in the agenda is raw mango. If I am successful in preparing mango pickle today, then as a treat will work on SSS challenge!

 

 

Beyond TAST 2018-4. Layered Embroidery-1

This time also it is an interesting concept on Beyond TAST challenge. The idea of layering the stitches is a new thing for me. Kutch work, mirror work, couching – on all these a certain amount of interlacing, layering were worked. But to work a piece with the main purpose of layering with stitches is different.
Sharon had started the flow with Rice stitch. I am keeping aside the possibilities of rice stitch and square boss stitch for the time being. Crewel embroidery details seems like a good place to start.
A linen bought from IKEA was prepared to work this sampler.

The flower started with flat stitch in two shades of pink.

Pistil stitches in blue worked over the petals.

Outlined with chain stitch. The completed flower.

Feather stitch and Satin stitches worked with basic stem stitch outline.

Again outlining with chain stitch

Buttonhole stitch around the feather stitch.

After filling one half of the leaf with coral stitch, satin stitches are layered.

Worked padded satin for the other part of the top leaf.

After working the stem stitch, this sample is completed.

Layering with stitches is a different angle which needs to be explored further.
