An acquaintance of mine wanted an embroidered yoke in cream. She said that her cream based kalamkari fabric needed a multi coloured embroidered yoke. Since I had not seen the fabric, the colours were chosen on the basis of matching it with cream/gray/black.
The embroidery was done with, chain, herringbone filling, back stitch and double cross stitches. Starting with dark blue thread-

Then moved on to dark pink, majenta, medium blue

I liked the way this stitch curled, so wanted to try motifs by combining with other stitches.

7.I started with working individual stitches to see the variation between this stitch and pistil stitch. then worked these individual stitches in a circle, then worked them with Algerian eye stitch, raised cross stitch and laced herringbone square. Detached buttonhole stitches are worked over scroll stitches in the last sample.

8.The first row is a combination of scroll stitch and chain stitch. After working the scroll stitch and individual fly stitches, Pekinese stitch is worked between them in the last row.

Though I couldn’t grasp the full potential of this stitch, scroll stitch is a very useful stitch and I am happy with these experiments.

Today I experimented two rows of scroll stitches together. I was not able to achieve a braided look as suggested by Sharon because my stitches are still not neat.

4. In the first two rows I worked scroll stitches rows one below the other, though in the second row, I looped the thread through the previous row. In the third row three scroll stitches set are worked in two levels and I tried replicating it again, a failure!

5.In these samples scroll stitch rows are facing each other. I worked from left to right and returned back in the first sample. After working the top row left to right, I worked the opposite .that is, from right to left in the second sample. And to my surprise found that, I could control this stitch much better this way. Hurray! In the third sample, after working two rows of scroll stitches apart in my way, a thread was laced through both rows.

6. In the first sample, the scroll stitch rows are facing away from each other. The same idea continues in the second sample which was later whipped with red thread. The last few stitches were not whipped to see the gap between two rows and how the whipping changed the look of the rows.

This week’s stitch on the TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB is scroll stitch. Though I have come across this stitch on embroidery books, I have never tried this stitch. This challenge is giving me a chance to work this stitch. The tension and knotting are proving tricky at this stage.

The details of the samples-
1. These samples are trials of this stitch. The angle of the stitch in the first row, is downward towards left, in the second row, straight downwards and in the third row, downwards towards right.

2. I tried working this stitch with longer insertion and failed in the first row. Then I tried working this stitches closer by inserting in the next hole, in the second row, which needs some fine tuning. Then worked a row were the scroll stitches are alternatively apart and close. The double scroll stitches [closely worked] and single scroll stitches are alternated [sometimes forgotten!] in the fourth row.

3. This first row had to be detailed, otherwise I‘ll never be able to understand it! This is zigzag scroll stitch.in the second row, the stitches are worked at three levels to form a wave pattern. Detailing becomes important in the third row too. This is up and down scroll stitch, the stitches are slanted downwards and upwards alternatively.

Another outline for mirrors were worked with pink and gold zari thread.

Yoke with large mirrors worked in four strands of blue cotton skein.

The small mirrors on the neckline were worked in two strands. Light blue cone thread was couched down around the neckline and yoke.

The fabric looks different, because I wanted avoid my reflection, flash and light source from the window on the mirrors. This tunic is ideal to be worn with blue jeans or leggings or salwars.

This tunic fabric is soft handloom cotton in mustard yellow colour and on it are large block printed floral prints in Indigo blue.

The idea was, to embroider neckline and yoke with large and medium round mirrors.This yoke fabric was indigo blue with small stripes in black, which was perfect.

Embroidery details-
The spaces in between the mirror placements were embroidered in Cretan stitch filling in yellow colour of the tunic fabric.

The yoke part- the Cretan fillings were outlined with zari[metallic] thread. The mirror circles were also outlined in chain stitch with majenta cone thread.

Today I worked this stitch with other TAST stitches to create some motif patterns .

4.Details of these samples, this stitch is combined with- French knots, arrow head, bullion knots, pistil stitches and detached chain stitches.

5.The first sample is with stem stitch and detached chain leaves, the second one is with Italian border stitch, the last two are with buttonhole stitch and fly stitches.

6.The other stitches in these samples are- buttonhole wheel variation, Pekinese stitch variation, sheaf stitch, wheat ear stitch, whipped wheel variation and woven detached chain.

7.Cretan and herringbone stitches are worked as squares in the first two samples. Fly stitches, feather stitch and Algerian eye stitches are worked in the last three samples.

These stitch combinations will be useful to use on decorative embroidery projects. This is a lovely stitch.

This week’s stitch on the TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB is raised cross stitch flower. This is a new stitch for me. This challenge is showing new ways of working on familiar stitches.

1.In these samples the stitch is worked in different sizes[first four], in two colours and with different threads.

2.In these samples I varied the cross stitches –ablong , wide, double ,upright, triangle, and star-and worked over them.

3.Motif patterns were tried by placing the cross stitches differently. The last motif differs from the second motif, with upright cross stitches worked in pink.

4.In the first row, chain stitch lines are bordering Up and down feather stitch and rimjim thread is used to lace this row. Wheat ear stitch is combined with up and down feather stitch in the second row.

5.First row is worked with Breton stitch and the second row has three stitches- up and down feather stitch, pistil stitch and buttonholed herringbone. I like this row.

6.In the first row the combination is with French knots and detached chain stitches. Up and down feather stitch row is embellished with Pekinese stitch and bullion knots are worked on the peaks. Unless I write down the detail of the last row, it may not be understood at a later date.

In this sampler, I couldn’t work many variations, but still tried some stitch combinations to make it more interesting. In this challenge, beads are used extensively to embellish these stitches by other TAST  participants, I am still waiting to start.

This week’ stitch of the TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB is up and down feather stitch. This stitch was part of the earlier TAST challenge. I had posted my old sampler here. After dealing with the variations of the stitch last time, this time I tried working this stitch with other TAST stitches. The sampler –

3.A line of feather stitch is worked over the up and down feather stitch in the first row, small up and down feather stitches are worked in dark green in the spaces of up and down feather stitch row in the second sample. Not very impressive though!
