The Y stitch sampler on SSS challenge was completed on Saturday. This week is revision of last five stitches. The stitches on TAST challenge were worked earlier.
The cream yoke needed some lavender elements on it. They were worked this week. The details will be on a separate post.
Before starting with zardosi embroidery on this pink silk/cotton fabric, some outlines have to be worked with threads. This week, it is chain stitch with antique violet colour skein.

After working the border pattern with herringbone filling, a small kutchwork motif with sharp edges was worked with the same blue thread on this cream fabric.

This week will be spent on the progress of these two projects, the work on benarsi georgette neckline will resume after this.

The story of this yoke starts with this striped cotton fabric.

Thinking all these colours can be used for embroidery on a cream base, a cream cotton fabric was chosen for the tunic. This cream mangalagiri handloom cotton fabric was given to the tailor for marking the front and sleeves.

And  a simple border design was embroidered on the sleeves.

The embroidery for this mirror work started with green colour skein. The mirror outlines were worked n chain stitch, the curls were worked in stem stitch and the leaves in leaf stitch.

The second stage was to work the orange colour skein. Chain stitches and buttonhole stitches were worked with this thread.

Next in line was the antique violet colour skein. The triangles around the neck were worked in buttonhole stitches and the second mirror outlines were worked in chain stitch.

The last outline around mirrors were worked in polyester gold colour thread.

The diamond shaped mirrors were outlined with variegated polyester thread.

The remaining chain stitch outlines were worked in yellow colour skein.

The same yellow skein was used for working all the mirrors.

Oval shaped gold bead was the last detail to be worked on this embroidery.

This was the story of this tunic in 2014. After two and a half years, the same yoke became a part of another tunic. Which will be narrated later.

We have another new stitch on SSS challenge this week-Y-stitch. The working is on Queenie’s blog.
The sampler starts with the basic Y stitch. The Y stitches are worked closer in the second sample. The twisted chains are extended in the third sample. The fly stitches are longer in the fourth sample.

It is time to work the Y stitches horizontal. These horizontal Y’s are the first sample row. The Y stitches are worked first from left to right and from right to left to make a double row of Y stitches in the second sample.

An easy stitch to work. This stitch can be used as filling an empty space. This also gives rise to the idea of working two different stitches together. It will be an interesting exercise. The whole sampler.SSS.25.Y-stitch sampler

Stitch challenges
The last two week’s challenge stitches on TAST challenge were worked on earlier challenges. So not much of work is there on it. Yet to start exploring another innovative stitch on SSS challenge.
Projects
Two projects came as a surprise.
The green benarasi georgette tunic came back from the tailor without the inner neckline! He thought it was something to be trimmed out. After getting over this idea of vanishing neckline, I might be able to get on the job of placing the white stones.
Another surprise started in India. I had cream tunic with mirror work on it worked way back in 2014. It was slightly short and did not go well with the salwar. I had a lavender fabric to be matched with the mentioned salwar. Suddenly these two – the cream tunic and the lavender fabrics got together and became one lavender tunic with cream mirror work.
The cream embroidered piece needed some lavender elements on it, the work on it started on Monday.

Simple embroidery for the blue block printed tunic was started on cream fabric.

The work on string bag was completed and is with the tailor. I should definitely start sewing again if time permits.
The violet matka silk needs zardosi embroidery border worked in pink silk/ cotton fabric. it started with chain stitch in violet metallic thread.

It was a productive week.

This seems like a new found stitch on SSS challenge. The working is on Queenie’s blog. This is extension of cross stitch or ‘X’ stitch.
After working the cross stitches in variegated thread, the straight stitch rays are worked in orange thread.

Some more variations of rays on this part of the sampler. Angling the rays add another dimension to this stitch. The possibilities become more.

By arranging the stitches in a systematic manner we can fill large spaces on fabrics. Very useful stitch and opens up the mind to work these rays on other stitches.

Stitch challenges
This week’s stitch on SSS challenge is to be started tomorrow. TAST challenge stitch sampler was worked in 2012. Yet to upload the link on FB group page.
This picture shows green zardosi tube with beading needle and cotton skein. The tube will be cut into desired length with nail cutter, and will be sewn with the help of beading needle and thread. This kind of zardosi beads along with other embroidery stitches, stones and sequins constitute zardosi embroidery. This embroidery on grand scale is common on bridal outfits. Incidentally, zardosi tubes in few colours  were  bought during this trip to India.

Projects
The zardosi bead work on green benarasi georgette tunic with stones is yet to be completed. While working the stones near the neck outline, a thought came to mind that the stones might hinder the tailor’s work. Now the tunic and the unfinished neck embroidery piece are with the tailor. The embroidery can be worked after the tunic is sewn.
I was working on this string bag project during the end of 2016. The embroidery on this was resumed this week.

Projects to start
I have these two tunic fabrics.

The cream floral print is to be sewn without any embroidery. The blue fabric would have a simple embroidery. A design was drawn yesterday. Once the embroidery is completed, both will be given to the tailor for sewing. These fabrics are  cotton with kalamkari prints.
I had seen a Matka silk tunic in Chennai. It looked elegant and cool on that person. With this my understanding of Matka silk halts. While shopping for it, realized there are two varieties of Matka silks. This fabric was bought, it needs backing. An idea of a small floral border in zardosi embroidery is yet to reach the design stage.

With these projects to work and a stitch sampler to be started, this week will be busy.

This week’s stitch on SSS challenge was an easy one. The working on Queenie’s blog. Easy stitch does not mean more options for variations. The sampler started with ideas of variations to be worked on these running stitch rows.

The first row is the basic whipped running stitch. The running stitches are long in the second row and whipping is done over them. The third row has small running stitches worked at equal intervals and whipping is done over them. I noticed that when the running stitches are medium or long, the whipping twists them a little bit. But when the running stitches are small, they stay horizontal while whipping. What  a great discovery!

The running stitches are long and short alternatively and whipping is done over them in the first sample. The whipping continues on the following samples where the running stitch rows are more than one. Two adjacent rows of running stitches are whipped together in the second sample. Two rows of running stitches with space between them are whipped in the third sample. The fourth sample has up and down running stitch over which the whipping is done. The same idea is extended in the fifth sample to work whipping on four rows of running stitches. After working a simple running stitch row, another row of running stitches are worked at angles over them[ for assistance see the running stitch sampler], then they are whipped in the last sample.

Three rows of whipped running stitches is the first sample. After working three rows of running stitches, the last row alone is whipped in the second sample [I saw this sample on a book]. Alternate running stitches are whipped in the last sample.

Yes it was easy working on this stitch sampler. The running stitches are worked in perle cotton and the whipping is done with polyester thread.
