On SSS stitch challenge Rumanian stitch was 36th week stitch. I decided to use work this stitch on a square pattern. The details are here.
After working Rumanian stitches, the embroidery was further embellished with square mirrors worked in variegated thread. The two squares after stitching the mirrors.
This piece was given to the tailor and was sewn into a pouch. Side a
The other side looks like this.
It looks like the pouches used by tribal women. I love it. A simple embroidery done on pouch seems like a nice gift.

I found this beautiful green block printed material in cotton, and wanted to do some traditional Indian embroidery. I chose kutchwork with mirrors- because it is easier to cover more area with them.
The pattern was for the neck and sleeves.
I chose three simple border patterns- two in kutchwork , and one a combination of kutchwork and mirrors. The whole pattern was drawn on graph[ that’s why a square neck was chosen]
The embroidery was done in the same colour cloth as the block prints- generally I use the word rust for this colour, but I don’t know what others use.
The embroidery was worked in green, red and yellow, with the mirrors in self colour.

I had traced the pattern on to the cloth and had given it for to be sewn on the tunic, which the tailor did beautifully, later, I worked the embroidery. Working on the neck was alright[ though it was too thick for the frame!] the sleeves were quite tricky.

This tunic is a light blue hand printed fabric. It is  a very fine cotton, ideal for summer wear. The color was perfect for jeans .but later on ,this also took the avatar of salwar top[Indian tunic].I made a  square pattern around  the mirror and repeated it as  a border design.-

Light blue cotton tunicFor the central motif, I just extended the basic pattern. the sleeve border design-sleeves of blue tunic

Just a touch of light green and very light blue for colour coordination. The tunic is done and resting in India, for the summer.

This is the step by step method for attaching the mirror or shisha.

Hold the mirror with your thumb of your non-sewing hand.

We are going to cross over the mirror 4 times to secure it.

The space which we get in the middle, where all the lines cross  becomes the inner ring.

The outer ring is the circumference of the mirror.

3.Bring the needle up at the side at 5 ,go over and under the  2nd line at ‘A’.

The thread is now twisted once at ‘A’. Remember to bring the needle outside,

Otherwise even when the mirror is held, thread has the tendency to move over

to the corner ,and the mirror becomes loose.

Now move the needle over and under at ‘B’ ,now the thread is twisted inside.

Insert the needle at 6-3rd line

4.Bring the needle up at 7, go over and under at ‘C’[with needle outside].Again cross over and under at’D’[with needle inside] and insert the needle at 8-4th line

Diamond shaped mirror can be secured like this.

Notes- I have used Anchor stranded cotton-3 strands for this medium size mirror.

For big mirrors use 4 strands.

For small mirrors use 2 strands, otherwise this stitch will completely obscure the mirror .

If the inner circle gets bigger[when the tension of the thread is more], after  completing the stitch, the inner circle can be whipped and tightened.

Generally mirrors are heavy, so use cloth of medium thickness.

While learning and practicing ,keep the length of the thread sufficient to complete a mirror.Round mirrors have the tendency to slip away, when it is not held comfortably ..

I hope this tuitorial  will help people to embellish their embroidery with mirrors.

I enjoyed doing this,
