I am two days late in posting the works in progress. It is hard to remember the days in Chennai. After completing the Q stitch on SSS challenge, a project on silk blouse was done during this week. This blouse fabric had a wide gold border. My neighbour wanted some simple embroidery with stones and beads. Started the embroidery work with chain stitch in green silk thread.

Another chain stitch row with gold thread.

The saree is also the same peach silk with gold border. We could get dark red stone, the medium red stones did not match well with the richness of the silk fabric. Therefore chain stitches in red silk thread was worked on the semi circles created by green chain stitch row. The dark red stones were to be stitched here. I was hoping to subdue the colour of the stone to match with the fabric.

A small motif in gold was scattered here and there on the saree. I tried work a motif in gold thread and beads. After working the red stones and gold beads.

My friend who was sewing this blouse for her sister, wanted white stones on this project. I started with the white stones hoping it would go well with the beads, red stones and embroidery.

I wanted to combine some other stitches with this stitch to build seams. But first started with the variations of the beading treatments of this stitch.

To work the stitch combinations, other stitches were first worked on the sampler.

The first row, is with herringbone combination, the second row with up and down buttonhole stitch, the third row with half buttonhole wheels and the fourth row with feather stitch.

First tried some motifs with, square herringbones, whipped wheel and long tailed chain stitch and then moved on to  work rows with stem stitch curls, and running stitch.

I enjoyed working on this stitch sampler. Other stitches are worked in polyester thread. The beaded fern stitches were worked in green cotton skein. The beads I have are too small for the tapestry# 26 to pass through. For now, I am using beading needle to work  stitches with beads.

After exploring this fern stitch with few more samples the stitch sampler was completed.

3.Starting with two more samples of fern stitch rows worked together, the fern stitch is whipped in the third sample, and laced in the fourth sample. The pink thread is laced through individual fern stitches in the fifth sample.

4.In these samples the fern stitches are worked diagonally. The last two samples would be good as filling stitches.

5.The first sample has individual fern stitch and its inverted version worked alternatively. Two extra straight stitches are added in the second sample. French knots and detached chain stitches are worked along with fern stitch in the last two samples.

This is an easy and versatile stitch to work with. Similar to fly stitch. I enjoyed working on this sampler. Band sampler is easier for exploring new stitches.

I have not been working on TAST challenge stitches for the past few weeks. This week’s stitch is fern stitch, the working of which is on SharonB’s pintangle.
1. Started with the basic fern stitch in the first sample, the side straight stitches are too vertical in this sample. the second sample is better, the side straight stitches are long and short alternatively in the third sample. the straight stitches on the top are shorter than the ones at the bottom in the fourth sample.

2.The fern stitches are close and farther alternatively in the first sample. The fern stitches are worked very close in the second sample. Four rows of fern stitches form the third sample. Three rows of fern stitches worked facing each other in the fifth sample.

The last few details. A satin ribbon was couched[?] with woven squares. This was an experiment to see the ribbon and the woven squares has a filling treatment. The edges were fixed with woven trellis too. I used shaded yellow perle cotton for weaving.

This flower has woven trellis and its inverse worked together with cross stitch centre.

A lace flower with violet glass beads was fixed with eight woven trellis stitches. I thought it wouldn’t be possible to use loop for this, but it was possible and easier to work with loop.

I also tried two woven stitches on this paisley design. the top was woven with metallic thread.

It was not easy to work with stranded floss. With my scant collection of perle threads, I can’t experiment with colours.

I had seen a part of an embroidery on pinterest, where a shape was filled with florals and leaves. This gave me an idea to work this piece. Since I wanted to try this stitch as a linear stitch, as filling and worked over satin ribbon, these were also incorporated in to this. I was able to bring paisley design into this exercise, which might be used for some future project.

Some flowers that were worked today. Woven trellis stitch is worked in yellow and medium violet in this flower, with buttonhole and herringbone stitches.

An extra stitch was added to each side of the petal and woven trellis was worked on them. Three rows of chain stitches were worked in various shades of yellow.

Back to work on this piece now.

I worked some flowers with woven trellis stitch and other stitches. The woven trellis is worked in two shades of violet. Stem stitch, buttonhole and detached chains are worked in yellow, violet and yellow silk thread respectively.

25.119.woven tst-3

25.119.woven tst-3

I did not work the detached chains in the centre of this flower properly. Woven trellis is worked in antique violet and the Vandyke stitches are worked between them in dark violet.

25.119.woven tst-4

This flower is a combination of woven trellis with long tailed chain in light violet perle thread.

The basic idea is, to fill the paisley design with these flowers.
