This week’s stitch on SSS challenge is upright cross stitch. This is the first time I am working this stitch as sampler. Earlier this stitch was often used on stitch samplers and other embroidery projects to fill an empty space or as decorative stitch additions.
The working of the stitch is here on Queenie’s blog.
This sampler was started with the upright crosses worked horizontal in the first row. In the second row the stitches were worked diagonal and in the third row the diagonally worked upright crosses are worked closely. The diagonal upright crosses are worked in two patterns in the last two rows.

The first two rows are variations of extending the horizontal and vertical stitches. The upright crosses are worked over herringbone stitch row in the third row, they are worked in buttonhole stitch in the fourth row. The upright crosses are worked with chain stitches in the last sample. This stitch can be combined with other stitches in numerous ways.

This sampler is completed with the idea of stitch combinations that can be created with the use of upright cross stitch.
