blackwork

My pc is having some problem, so couldn’t continue with the details of this yoke   yesterday.
After filling the centre with green thread, back stitches on the border were worked in white thread.

I am still on the orange spree, now it is orange pearl beads which were added in between the border motifs.

The completed yoke was placed over the tunic fabric . the zari border is not seen here.

The usual procedure of the tailor doing his job well , resulted in the tunic looking like this.

I wanted to see the effect of using the same colours for yoke and the tunic fabric.
This was taken to the next level, when orange silk thread was used to embroider the filling pattern. Though a shape was drawn, working on that outline was not turning out to be impressive, so instead of working back stitch , I worked straight stitch rays to fill this shape.

The next thread was green . Back stitches were worked over the pattern with this thread.

The border needs to be worked on.

The mangalagiri cotton material comes in plain, striped, checked with or without zari or thread borders. Most of my embroidery work are done on this fabric. Being handloom cotton, they are cooler on skin during hot months, which is about most of the time!
They also come in block prints. I found this bright orange fabric with block printed motifs and zari dots on them. They call it mica print. It also had a zari border, which was used around the sleeves, neck and embroidered yoke.

Brownish green plain mangalagiri fabric was chosen for salwar[Indian pants].
The embroidery was done on plain orange fabric. pearl beads were also added after working the embroidery . The pattern was black work, which I drew on a graph paper. It has a filling pattern in the centre and a border.

Silk threads were used embroider this yoke. maroon thread was used on the border.

Antique golden beads and sequins were used as embellishments for this embroidery on the yoke. The central motif with beads-

The embroidered piece was given to the tailor for sewing,
As mentioned on my previous post, the salwar [Indian style pants] was a glossy printed black and gold fabric.
The completed tunic set-

The printed salwar and the yoke match well together. The embroidery did not take much time and I have worn it a few times. Fully satisfied with this set.

This is last part of the blackwork borders I had used as a yoke pattern. This particular set of borders are a combination of blackwork border patterns .
This yoke is small, and embroidered with shades of blue thread.
The third part of the pattern-

While browsing for some designs, I hit upon the idea of working some borders as a yoke pattern. Getting into the spirit of it thought blackwork borders can be used for this.
Then the tunic fabric was chosen, a light blue handloom cotton fabric.
I thought the yoke can be worked in white colour fabric, with threads in shades of blue.
The blackwork borders that were drawn on graph paper. Then this pattern was traced on to the white fabric. Then I started the embroidery on this pattern.
Step by step pictures were not taken.
So a part of the border -

It is a small yoke. two more parts are there. Will post them later.

I had worked blackwork border patterns on a white tunic earlier.

In this tunic , instead of drawing from a graph pattern, I did the blackwork on aida cloth itself.I wanted the embroidery borders on light cream cloth, the aida cloth was ideal for that.
The pattern I chose from a blackwork book and modified to my requirements.
The fabric is mercerised cotton in ikat weave.it has a sheen , which is not there in handloom cotton.
The thread colours- I used the fabric colour and a dark brown colour thread.

It saved me lot of time to do the embroidery on even weave cloth,
and it is easier to get an almost perfect effect[ because only God is perfect].this reminds me of an information, when the ethnic women do embroidery , they always do a motif which is not a part of the original pattern,or they atleast change the colour deliberately on a the pattern – to remind themselves that, only God can be perfect . this aspect I had seen in many ethnic embroidery pieces in India.
We don’t get exact even weave[or square evenweave] cloth in India, even the canvas cloth or waste canveas are only rectangular. While using these, we have to take care while choosing the pattern.
There is wide range of patterns , when used , enhances the embroidery and the overall effect of the work. We can try a small sampler motif on a piece of these cloths, before starting to work on a project, and avoid using four sided patterns.

I wanted to try some blackwork border for tunic. This tunic is handwoven  ikat  fabric in white colour.I did the blackwork pattern on black fabric.

First , the whole pattern was drawn on a graph paper- A central panel, 2 side panels and 2 borders for sleeves.

 The tunic looks like this-

Then I attached some antique beadhangings to the central panel.the closeup-

And for the side panels and sleeves, small silver colour beads were added. the closeup-

I could have used brighter pink thread,

while I was doing the embroidery, the pink looked ok. After attaching it to the tunic, it looks a bit dull.I  am quite fond of this fabric.

I enjoyed doing this month’s stitch explorer-Assissi embroidery.

But ,Iam not fully satisfied because, I don’t feel I have explored this embroidery.I did not try new and bigger ways. Iam still new to these challenges, and just feeling my way now around .

I did not explore trellis stitch at all -Iam yet to learn.Somehow I keep postponing it.

I eagerly waiting  for the next challenge, and hoping I can explore and finish it on time.

This is the last picture of my four assissi frame  designsassissi0041

Deer was the main theme.I chose  an easy blackwork fillng pattern.

I like the border of this picture the best of the four .

I forgot to take photo of this picture ,while I was working.
